East London is the hot, newly opened contemporary Asian restaurant atop of the iconic The London Hotel in Paddington. Offering flavoursome, fresh and aromatic dishes with traditional Sichuan and Shanghainese tastes, East London utilises modern cooking methods and traditional flavours to create Chinese comfort food at its best with a healthy point of difference.


Sydney Social 101 recently visited East London for dinner and we were very glad that we wore something billowy for the occasion. We started off with one of their delicious and refreshing Gin and Fever Tree Tonic mixes to get our taste buds warmed up and to cleanse our pallets. We tried the perfectly tart Aviation with grapefruit & lavender and the full-bodied and warming Noble Cut with peppercorn & rosemary. The perfect start to the meal!

We then moved onto the FOOD! The East London menu is designed for sharing which is perfect as we wanted to try as many dishes as possible! We started off with the “Heavenly” 8 vegetable dumplings which were as the title suggest, heavenly and full of delicious veges. We then moved to the Bang Bang Chicken with ginger, sesame, chili and peanuts which was the perfect fresh blend of spice, crunch and peanuts. Steamed fish, ginger, chilli, shallots & soy broth was the next dish out. The fish was a perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth piece of salmon that was served in a light but flavoursome blend of ginger, chilli and soy. We enjoyed the salmon with the crowd favourite for the night, the Kung Pao brussel sprouts served with almonds. Now don’t let the words ‘Brussel and Sprouts’ put you off, this dish is literally a flavour explosion. The sprouts were perfectly cooked in an addictive Kung Pao sauce (soy, honey, sesame oil) and topped with slivered almonds. I would highly recommend trying this dish!

Although we were full to the brim we still made room for dessert. Dessert was Coconut sago, mango, lychee, mint & almonds. It was not too heavy and was the perfect sweet and fruity way to end the meal. They also have Complimentary fresh fruit available it you want to finish your meal on a fruity and free note.

As well as an extensive wine list, East London also offers a delightful variety of Asian inspired cocktails. Referencing the flavours of The East, the East London is sure to impress even the most astute cocktail lover, with popular options including Firefly -chili infused tequila, mango, yuzu and agave or Salted Caramel Espresso martini – Absolut Vodka, kahlua and fresh espresso.
