I am a sweet tooth and sugar addict and I know a good cake and sweet treat when I taste one, so believe me when I say Jillian’s Cakery on Elizabeth Street Surry Hills has some of the most delicious cakes and sugary goodies in Sydney.
Owner and head cake expert, Jillian Butler, started out in the corporate world before being introduced to the sweet life at a patisserie in Dallas. From there she decided to quit her job and train in classical baking at Le Cordon Bleu in Sydney and in 2014, opened the sweet treat haven that’s now Jillian’s Cakery.
Jillian’s Cakery is leading the pack in Southern American inspired fresh, whole cakes and sweet treats with a side of vintage charm. True to Jillian’s time spent in the Deep South, the cornershop-cakery sells American inspired cakes baked from scratch – no preservatives, no pre-mixes and no chemicals.
Sydney Social 101 recently had the delightful task of taste testing some of Jillian’s top treats and cakes. The Bunny’s Carrot three layer cake was beautifully moist, absolutely packed with carrots and topped with luscious layers of cream cheese. Chocoholics will love the Devil’s Food Chocolate cake which is deeply chocolaty, filled with whipped chocolate ganache and covered in creamy, fudgy chocolate icing- not for the faint hearted! The Ruby Red Velvet cake is a Southern favourite and it is definitely a crowd favourite here at SS101. The cake is a stunning crimson colour and has a beautiful vanilla taste with a hint of dark cocoa and is covered in a buttery vanilla bean icing. Drool!
We also tried the Caramel/ Almond squares; a melt-in-your-mouth shortbread topped with burnt, salted caramel and toasted slivered almonds and my personal favourite, the American Fudge brownie. I have tried a lot of brownies and this one is on the top of my list. It was rich, the perfect level of chocolate intensity and it was so fudgy, moist and delicious. It was hard to stop at one!
Jillian’s Cakery is a combination of an old-school sweet shop and eclectic antiques. Rustic dark timber and coastal hues line the walls, glass cabinets are filled with the cafe’s daily offerings, and displays of vintage kitchenware and collectables add to the nostalgic feel of the intimate space.
With Jillian and a close-knit team at the helm, Jillian’s Cakery is Southern Hospitality at its best. Customer names and coffee orders are remembered, and staff choose the daily mix of tunes ranging from 50s to pop.
